TOWN OF HUNTINGTON HOUSING AUTHORITY RECOGNIZES TWO OUTSTANDING RESIDENTS

(Huntington, NY) – Two members of the Huntington community were recognized by the Huntington Housing Authority (HHA) for their outstanding academic and financial accomplishments.

Aretha Delk, a single mom with four children, was honored for graduating from the HHA’s "Housing Choice Voucher Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) Program." FSS is a HUD program that encourages communities to develop local strategies to help voucher families obtain employment that will lead to economic independence and self-sufficiency. Public housing agencies (PHAs) work with social service agencies, schools, businesses, and other local partners to develop a comprehensive program that gives participating FSS family members the skills and experience to enable them to obtain employment that pays a living wage.

Aretha is putting herself through college, holds a full-time job as a bus driver and also volunteers at a local homeless shelter. As a hobby, she has taught herself sign language.

In addition to Aretha, HHA resident Aasad Miller, 17, was recognized for his outstanding academic accomplishments. Assad graduated Huntington High School and received a $7,000 scholarship to attend Monroe College where he will study baking and pastry arts.

“Congratulations to Aretha and Assad for their outstanding achievements,” said Siela Bynoe, Huntington Housing Authority Executive Director. “We are delighted that these two deserving individuals took advantage of HHA’s wonderful resources, designed to serve as a vehicle to strengthen their lifestyle.”

The HHA of the town of Huntington is a public agency whose business is to:

  • Ensure that safe, decent and quality affordable housing opportunities exist for low-income families;
  • Break the poverty cycle by serving as a catalyst for our residents to become economically self-sufficient;
  • Create meaningful partnerships to maximize available community resources for our residents.
